A Lesson From Africa
Last year in our church we spent some time discussing the countries of Africa and why there was such a problem with poverty. We did some research into the causes of poverty and found out what a big problem it is for many people in the world’s largest continent.
There are many contributing factors to Africa being such a poor continent including AIDS, unemployment, poor government and corruption. However, one of the most interesting factors which seemed to keep getting mentioned was a lack of education. A good education can be directly related to employment and gives basic knowledge needed to work, trade and create wealth.
I remembered when I was in Haiti a few years ago and saw teenagers begging on the sides of the roads. We gave them bread and it kept them happy for a day but the next day they would have to beg again. To see them liberated from that situation would require something other than bread... it would required knowledge that would change the way they think. Education is a part of that.
As I came back to Australia and realised what our tax dollars have given us in terms of roads, hospitals and free education, I realised what a lucky country we really are. It really is food for thought and I hope is gives you a sense of appreciation for all that we have here in Mt Morgan. We really do live in a lucky country.
