Capricornia Electorate is Stingy
Australia is broken up into about 150 areas called Electorates for voting purposes. The electorate I live in is called Capricornia.
A few weeks ago I was reading the Courier Mail and noticed an article comparing the giving of people to charities by electorate. The most generous electorate was Wentworth (from memory) in Sydney where they gave on average 4% of their income to charity. We commend the people of that electorate.
However sad to say, Capricornia was second to last on the list as being nearly the stingiest electorate in Australia. The giving was less than 1% of income to charity.
It's true that some people say you have to have money to give it, and that Capricornia is definitely a poorer electorate than Wentworth or some of the big city electorates. However which really comes first, the chicken or the egg?
Do poor people give less because they are poor, or are they poor because they give less? Do rich people give more because they are rich, or are they rich because they give more?
Jesus said that "It is more blessed to give than to receive." From this it sounds to me as though the people of Capricornia would do much better if we were more generous. Hats off to the people of Wentworth. We want a spirit of generosity here in Capricornia too.
