As well as being a chaplain, I’m a pastor too.  At home in my filing cabinet I have evangelistic response slips from a number of evangelistic events I have held in my home town of Mt Morgan.  Some of these slips are for kids actually in my schools.  Every single person on these slips has said the “sinner’s prayer” and been told by a well meaning believer that “You are now a Christian." 

The sad part is that not a single person out of those 500 slips actually attends any church.  I concluded recently that there is something wrong with the way most of us believers think about evangelism and the gospel. 

This is a very blunt article (as you will see later) and in typical David Letterman style we count backwards from ten to one:

Last Wednesday I picked up a hitch-hiker. He was an elderly man who needed to go from Rockhampton to Mt Morgan and his car wasn’t working. Usually I don’t offer lifts to strangers because of the dangerous nature of that kind of thing – but I felt on this occasion that I should. Also, he was elderly and looked in terrible need of help.

1. God must be the most important thing in your life
2. Don’t idolize other things other than God
3. Don’t use God’s name as a swear word

There is something about injustice, or even perceived injustice that makes our blood boil. When something terrible happens, and there is justice, many people feel that there has been some kind of rectification of the problem and feel much better.

There is a lot of pressure in Christianity at times to share the gospel and to make disciples....you know, to try and bring your friends to church. On top of that there are myriads of meetings we can attend. If we attend the meetings we are a good christian, and it proves that we really love God. That's how it often seems anyway.

To return to God means to do what the Bible calls repentance.  This is to make a decision to do things God's way instead of any other way.  This is where true blessing and life begins.  Its like making a U-turn with your life.  To turn back from the way you were going and to begin going the way God wants.
