The Point of No Return
I want to tell you about something which occurred to me when I was about 14. I only just sat down to write to everyone and wasn't really sure what to write but this came to mind, and I think you will be encouraged by it.
We had this travelling preacher come to church on Sunday and at the evening service He preached about these fighter pilots in world war 2. Apparently when certain bomber planes left on important missions, because of the long distance to cover before dropping their bombs, they wouldn't have enough fuel to make it home. So on these particular missions there would come a point in the mission when it was the "point of no return." If they turned around at that moment, then they would get home, but the mission would fail. If they continued on, they would most likely achieve their mission, but would not be coming home. That was a decision they had to make.
It was a vivid message which stuck in my mind. He also told the story about a young man who became a missionary to native south American Indians and gave his whole life up for these people. Even though this man was successful in sport, business and everything he took to, he gave it all up for God and these Indians. One day another believer approached him and said "You are throwing you life away here, you could be so successful and happy." And this young man replied "I have passed the point of no return."
It was a challenge to me and I have never forgotten it.
That night the preacher (from South Africa ) challenged the whole congregation to lay their life down like this young missionary man (who was later killed by the Indians). He asked us all if we would be willing to cross the point of no return with our own lives. I can't remember very well, but there was a dozen or so people, including myself, who went forward and laid our lives down for that. I never though much of it later, but just now (this very minute) God brought it all back to memory and I realise my life is totally given to God. I have no say anymore because I have passed the point of no return.
I would challenge you in the same way that I was challenged all those years ago. Are you willing to pass that point of no return for Jesus? Would you be willing to go wherever He wants, to do whatever He asks and even to die for Him if necessary? It's definitely a big step to take so I'll let you think it over. I hope you are willing to lay your life down for Him.
He may not require anything of you immediately (and yet He may) but you can be sure, He will have heard your response and at the right time you will be used. In the meanwhile, you must keep your heart soft before God, willing to obey when He calls.
